Herman Vanderpoortenstadion

The name on the gates has changed twice, and neither change had anything to do with football. When the ground went up in 1925 in the Lisp district on the edge of Lier, it took the neighbourhood's name, Lisperstadion. It later became the Herman Vanderpoortenstadion, honouring a former mayor of the city — a civic tribute rather than a sponsor's plaque, which puts it in different company from the commercially named grounds that surround it in Belgian football.

Lierse SK have played here since the opening, and the ground's shape today owes more to patient rebuilding than to any single overhaul. A wooden stand gave way to concrete in 1965; the stand behind one goal was pulled down and replaced with a two-tier section in a 2000 renovation that also reworked the main concrete stand, with further work following in 2009. That layered history explains why capacity figures vary between sources — some still cite an older total of around 15,500, from before the last rounds of building were finished.

What stands now holds 14,538, with 4,311 of those places on standing terraces rather than seats — a detail that marks it out from the fully seated stadiums many of its Belgian First Division peers have moved to. The pitch is natural grass, kept to the standard the surface has always been. The address itself carries a small inconsistency: most records point to Lispersesteenweg 237, though at least one database lists Voetbalstraat 4 for the same ground.
