Ibrox Stadium

Ibrox's shape today owes less to ambition than to two tragedies separated by nearly seventy years. On 5 April 1902, during a Scotland v England match, a section of wooden terracing collapsed, killing dozens of spectators. Decades later, on 2 January 1971, a crush on an exit stairway during the Rangers–Celtic derby claimed 66 lives — the disaster that forced the ground's rebuilding through the 1970s and 1980s into the enclosed bowl that stands on Edmiston Drive now.

Amid that reconstruction, one piece survived intact: the Main Stand, raised in 1928 to a design by Archibald Leitch, the engineer whose red-brick facades and criss-cross balustrades became the template for British football grounds of the era. It remains one of the few Leitch stands still standing largely as built.

The ground opened in 1899 as Ibrox Park, on the south bank of the Clyde, and took its present name only once the Copland Road end went fully seated in 1997. Rangers have played there ever since. The attendance record, close to 118,567, dates to a Rangers–Celtic derby on 2 January 1939 — a figure from an era of open terracing that today's all-seated capacity of 51,700 makes impossible to approach again.
