J-Green Sakai
Sakai, Japan
J-Green Sakai is not a traditional stadium; it is a municipal training centre that opened in 2010, built by the Hanatani Corporation to a design by Showa Sekkei. The main pitch is natural grass, while a ring of auxiliary fields surrounds it in a grid, their surfaces a mix of turf types.
The complex has been quiet for years as a home for football. FC Osaka used the main field for four seasons in the Japan Football League before moving to Hanazono Rugby Stadium for their J3 debut in 2023. Nothing else has claimed the spot as a long-term base.
The value of the place turned out to be its versatility. It hosted group stage matches of the 2012 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup, including a fixture between the USA and Japan. The same year saw the World Ultimate Club Championship, and in 2016 it staged the final and third-place matches of the 19th JOC Junior Olympic Cup. National teams have come to train here, from the Philippine U-14 side to the Iranian national team and the Thailand Women’s National Team.
Indepediente trained on the pitch in preparation for the 2018 Suruga Bank Championship, though the final took place elsewhere. The facility holds no official attendance record for a single match.
