Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates
Formerly: Sheikh Zayed Stadium
The Zayed Sports City Stadium has stood at the centre of Abu Dhabi since opening in January 1980. Built by French architects Henri Colboc, Pierre Dalidet and Georges Philippe, it remains the largest ground in the United Arab Emirates. The capacity sits at 44260, though the original design held 60000 before seating was added for regular matches. The pitch is natural grass.
It has hosted the 1996 AFC Asian Cup final and two FIFA Club World Cup finals, drawing crowds that have occasionally filled the stands well beyond the seated limit.
The stadium was renamed from its former title, Sheikh Zayed Stadium, but the change has barely moved the way people talk about the place.
