Cádiz built this ground three years before European clubs began routinely naming their stadiums after sponsors, and it has worn three names since: Ramón de Carranza for most of its life, then Nuevo Mirandilla when the 2021 historical memory law forced the city to strip a Francoist general's name off the gate, and now the sponsor plate reading JP Financial Estadio. What hasn't changed is where it sits, tucked into the Ла Лагуна neighbourhood of Extramuros, close enough to the old town that the ground has always felt stitched into the city rather than parked on its edge.

The pitch has been dug up and rebuilt around twice. The first reconstruction, in 1984, tore out the athletics track that had kept fans at arm's length from the touchline. The second ran from 2003 to 2012, cost €68 million and pushed capacity up to just over 25,000 before later adjustments settled it at its current level. Real Madrid supplied the record crowd, more than 31,000 packed in for a match in 1972, long before either rebuild.

Spain's national side has used the ground for competitive business, beating Malta 7-0 here in a Euro 2020 qualifier in November 2019. The stadium's most unsettling afternoon came during a Barcelona fixture in September 2022, when a supporter's cardiac arrest in the stands halted play for the best part of an hour, a reminder that these buildings hold more than football. Outside match days, the calendar has increasingly filled with concerts rather than fixtures.
