The ground sits in the Munuki area of Juba , close to the Hai Malakal Cemetery and within reach of the White Nile. It opened in 1962, while the First Sudanese Civil War was running, built by the Sudanese government under President Ibrahim Abboud.

That second life began in 2012, when South Sudan gained independence and the national side needed a home. FIFA funded a reconstruction that laid the artificial surface now in place, with FIFA officials inspecting the work in October 2022.

The reopening came on 11 June 2024, with President Salva Kiir Mayardit and FIFA President Gianni Infantino present, and the fixture chosen was a World Cup qualifier against Sudan : the country the ground was built by, playing the country it now belongs to. A crowd of 10,000 filled it, matching the highest figure recorded here, set against Mauritania on 7 October 2015.

Between the international dates the stadium belongs to Al-Malakia , Atlabara and Al-Salam , and to things that are not football at all — concerts, and traditional wrestling tournaments that draw their own following.
