Kaplakriki
The lava field gave the place its shape before anyone laid a pitch on it. Kaplakriki sits in Kaplahraun, on the edge of Хафнарфьордюр, and has been Kaplakriki, or Kaplakrikavöllur, since 1973 and nothing else.
What changed it was the work begun in 2011 and signed off by Batteríið Architects in 2014. The stands were widened and given a roof; behind them went new lobbies, dressing rooms and social space, plus an indoor athletics hall with a 200-metre track.
The national side has used it as an alternative home rather than a main one. On 29 May 2010 Iceland beat Андорра 4–0 in a friendly here. The ground has never staged a cup final, though semi-finals and earlier rounds do turn up on the calendar.
Football is not the whole of it. In 1995 Kaplakriki took group matches of the men's handball World Championship, with Croatia, Russia, the Czech Republic, Cuba, Slovenia and Morocco all playing here. And it has a concert history that predates the rebuild: Rage Against the Machine in June 1993, Massive Attack in 1997, Pixies in 2004, Franz Ferdinand in 2005. Of Monsters and Men are booked for 17 October 2026.
