Kassam Stadium

Kassam Stadium takes its name not from a sponsor but from the man who owned the land beneath it, Firoz Kassam, once chairman of Oxford United. It finally opened in August 2001, some fifteen million pounds later.

A plan to add a temporary stand in 2016 and lift capacity never came to anything, so the ground has held at 12,500 for close to a quarter of a century. The pitch is newer: a hybrid turf system went in during the summer of 2023.

Beyond football, the stadium has done duty as a rugby venue — hosting a Powergen Cup semi-final in 2003 and an RFU Championship play-off leg in 2012 — and, less predictably, as flood relief housing for Abingdon residents in 2007 and a COVID-19 vaccination site in 2021. The 2024/25 season brought them back to a higher tier than the ground has known before, with Championship football played there for the first time.
