The stadium does not stand on a hill or look across a bay. It sits inside the Aspire Zone in Al Waab. The main thing about it is the scale of the rebuild. Between 2014 and 2017, the ground was pulled apart and put back together with a new roof and a cooling system. That roof covers the seats and part of the pitch, shielding it from the desert sun.

The surface is natural grass. It looks flat and hard, kept in condition by the climate control. The seating is arranged in tiers that curve around the field. The pitch is viewed from a distance. The atmosphere is shaped by the national side, which is the primary tenant, and major finals have bounced through the doors. The 2022 FIFA World Cup Third Place Playoff between Croatia and Morocco was one such event, drawing a crowd that nearly filled the 45,857 seats.

What makes it different from a standard ground is the technology buried beneath the turf and in the steelwork above. The "urban refrigeration" system pumps cool air through the stands, a rare feature for a football venue in the region. The building is also the first in the world to achieve a four-star rating from the Global Sustainability Assessment System, a label earned during the renovation phase. It is a place where the past and a very recent future sit side by side. The original 1976 structure remains in the foundations, but the experience is entirely modern. Visitors see a pristine rectangle of green, surrounded by a sea of spectators, with no sense of age in the architecture.

The pitch is oriented to avoid direct sunlight during evening matches, a detail managed by the new roof’s design. Supporters stand or sit with a clear view of every movement, though the acoustics are dampened by the modern materials. The ground has hosted everything from the 2011 AFC Asian Cup Final to the 2019 FIFA Club World Cup Final, yet it retains a quiet dignity. It is not a place built for noise, but for spectacle.
