Ask a Leicester supporter what the ground on Filbert Way means, and the answer runs through 2016 before it runs through anything else.

The naming history says as much about the club's ownership as any trophy. It opened in 2002 as Walkers Stadium, tied to the crisp maker that backed the club through years of yo-yoing between divisions.

Expansion has been talked about longer than it has been built. Plans for close to 42,000 seats surfaced back in 2015, edged through planning approval in 2022 and 2023, and construction was still unfinished as of early 2025 — the bowl holding at 32,259 in the meantime. What did change more quickly was the safe standing area installed for the 2024/25 season, covering over 5,600 seats.

The record for a football crowd here, 32,241 against Sunderland in August 2015, sits oddly alongside the ground's true attendance peak: a Kasabian concert in May 2016 that pulled in 54,000 over two nights, well beyond anything a matchday has managed. Rugby has had its say too — Leicester Tigers brought over 32,500 through the gates for a fixture against Bath in 2006, a reminder that the ground has never belonged to football alone.
