The pitch on Antti Chydeniuksenkatu has been in use since a July afternoon in 1935, and it has kept the same name ever since. In a country where municipal grounds change titles with every commercial cycle, Kokkolan keskuskenttä is still what it was called on the day it opened: the central field, owned then and now by the city of Kokkola.

Who drew it, and who laid it out, is not recorded in anything that survives.

What changed came in 2020. The natural grass was taken up and replaced with heated artificial turf. The heating matters more than the surface itself — it decides how much football gets played here between the autumn and the spring, rather than how the ball runs.

The ground's position in the city is about to shift. Kokkola Areena, a separate venue rather than a renaming of this one, is due to open in 2026. That leaves the older pitch with a question it has not had to answer before: what a ninety-year-old central field does once the city has somewhere newer to send its football. Whether the answer is training, junior fixtures or simply less of everything, the 2020 investment in the turf suggests the city was not writing it off.
