The ground on Goirleseweg opened on 31 May 1995, three years after the demolition of the Gemeentelijk Sportpark Tilburg. What replaced the old sportpark was not a rebuild but a different kind of ground: a single enclosure wrapped tight around a pitch of 105 by 68 metres.

The name came later. Built simply as the Willem II Stadion , it was renamed in 2009 to Koning Willem II Stadion , adding the royal title for King Willem II of the Netherlands. Fourteen years separate the opening from the renaming.

The pitch is natural grass, and has stayed that way through a period when that stopped being automatic in the Dutch top flight. In the 2024–25 season every Eredivisie club played on natural or hybrid turf, and Willem II were not among those who had moved to an artificial surface.

It sits at Goirleseweg 34, in the 5026 PC postcode, south of the city centre.
