Lappeenrannan jäähalli
Lappeenranta, Finland
The Lappeenrannan jäähalli sits in the heart of the Finnish city. It opened in 1972, enclosing an older outdoor track, and has remained a fixture since.
Inside, the air is cold and the surface is natural ice. The crowd sits close to the action, and the noise stays inside. When the SaiPa team plays, the stands fill up. That has been the case for a long time. The arena holds nearly five thousand people, enough for a full house when the team needs a boost.
The building has seen changes. A major renovation in 2004 added suites and a storm shelter, but the old roof still carries the weight of the snow. In 2021, a new four-sided scoreboard replaced the one that had hung from the ceiling for years.
It is not just a hockey venue. In recent years it has hosted concerts and fairs, but the main purpose remains the game. The city manages the facility, and while there are plans to build something new, the old hall still holds the games.
