Lerkendal Stadion

Lerkendal is Rosenborg's ground and, by extension, the closest thing Trondheim has to a civic institution — one club, one stadium, since 1947. The wooden stands that first went up were replaced with concrete in the early 1960s, but the shape the stadium wears now dates to a longer rebuild through the late 1990s and into 2002, a project that ran to 335 million kroner and turned a modest provincial ground into a proper top-flight arena with covered seating on all four sides.

None of the stands carry the stadium's own name to a sponsor — Lerkendal has stayed Lerkendal — but the individual sides do: the Hent Stand to the north, EiendomsMegler1 to the east, Rema to the west, Adressa to the south, a small reminder of how thoroughly local business has bought into the place. The pitch itself was relaid in 2017 with a hybrid SISGrass surface, replacing the Desso GrassMaster system that had been down since 2013.

The record crowd goes back to October 1985, when 28,569 packed in to watch Rosenborg beat Lillestrøm and take the Norwegian title — a figure the current all-seater capacity of 21,423 has no way of matching again. Before the 2002 rebuild, capacity had actually been cut further still, down to around 12,200 in the mid-1990s to meet UEFA's requirements, before the reconstruction brought it back up past 21,000.
