The number that explains this ground is not the one printed beside it today. On 28 March 1954 a crowd of 53,000 packed in to watch Saarland play Germany in a World Cup qualifier and lose 1:3, and that record has stood ever since. Ten weeks after the Germany match, Uruguay came to Saarbrücken and won 7:1 on the same pitch.
Everything since has been a contraction. What survived the shrinking is the terracing — 4,588 covered standing places , so this is not an all-seater.
The name has never been for sale.
The most recent night worth the old capacity came on 2 April 2024 , when a third-division 1. FC Saarbrücken hosted a DFB-Pokal semi-final.
