Lugogo Stadium
Kampala, Uganda
Formerly: Lugogo Cricket Oval, StarTimes Stadium, MTN Omondi Stadium, Phillip Omondi Stadium
The playing surface at Lugogo Stadium is artificial turf, a change made when the original grass gave way to a 3G pitch installed through the FIFA Challenger Project. This shift settled the question of how the ground plays. Instead, the surface offers consistent speed, though the stadium's away end never stopped demanding more attention from the visitors when the game went physical.
The venue leans on its history rather than new gloss. It sat on Hesketh Bell Road when it first opened in 1957, making it one of the oldest sporting venues in Uganda. The capacity sits at 8,000 for football, a number that makes the crowd feel close to the action.
It is a ground that has seen its name change with every sponsorship wave. It was the Lugogo Cricket Oval, then the StarTimes Stadium, and later the MTN Omondi Stadium. Now, it carries the name of Phillip Omondi, a local legend. The stadium is home to KCCA FC, and the players seem to carry the weight of the suburb when they step onto the field. The artificial turf does not need rain to be playable, and it allows the matches to continue without the delay often found on natural grass.
The complex also includes an indoor arena.
