For thirteen years the football in Zwolle was played on artificial turf, laid when PEC Zwolle moved in during 2007 and lifted only in June 2020. The club began pulling it up that summer; seven or eight weeks later the replacement was handed a debut, the first natural grass the ground had carried since the move.

The name has changed almost as often as the surface. It opened as FC Zwolle Stadion, became the IJsseldelta Stadion on 12 July 2012, and took the MAC³PARK Stadion title on 1 July 2016. In European competition it is listed as PEC Zwolle Stadion, UEFA advertising rules removing the sponsor from the paperwork.

It was not built at its present size either. Work started on 9 March 2007 and the ground opened on 29 August 2009 with 10,500 seats, then grew in stages, the last of them finished in the summer of 2018. The highest crowd recorded is the full house; Eredivisie matches here sell out or come close to it.

The women's side has drawn its own numbers. A crowd of 4,514 watched PEC Zwolle Vrouwen against ADO Den Haag Vrouwen on 8 February 2019, and the venue took an international on 2 September 2022, when the Netherlands met Scotland in a friendly. Beyond that the calendar stays domestic — no KNVB Cup final and no European final has been staged here — with concerts filling the gaps between league weekends.
