Maksimir

On 13 May 1990 the terraces at Maksimir gave way to a running battle between Dinamo Zagreb and Red Star Belgrade supporters; the riot is widely treated as a precursor to the Croatian War of Independence. On 17 October, the same pitch staged Croatia's first official international of the modern era, a 2–1 win over the United States.

The land came from the Archdiocese of Zagreb, bought by the multi-sports club HAŠK, and the first stand here was wooden and held 6,000. A design for 60,000, then a north stand replaced at the end of the 1990s, then a 2011 rebuild that brought in under-soil heating and cut the seating count rather than raising it. The pitch was relaid in 2024 with natural sod stitched through with synthetic fibre.

The attendance record was set on 19 July 1973, when 64,138 came for NK Zagreb against NK Osijek. Two matches of the 1976 European Championship were played here, including the semi-final between Czechoslovakia and the Netherlands, and the 1987 Summer Universiade used the ground as well.

The Zagreb earthquake of 22 March 2020 left the east stand unsafe, and it was closed, taking working capacity down to 25,912. In February 2025 the city and the club set out plans to demolish the stadium and build a 35,000-seat replacement, costed at €175 million and timed for Euro 2028, with Dinamo playing at Kranjčevićeva in the meantime.
