McDonald Jones Stadium
Newcastle, Australia
Formerly: International Sports Centre, Marathon Stadium, EnergyAustralia Stadium, Ausgrid Stadium, Hunter Stadium
The McDonald Jones Stadium sits in Broadmeadow, a suburb of Newcastle. The colours are not random — they match the Newcastle Jets and the Newcastle Knights, who have shared the venue since the turn of the century and the late 1980s respectively.
What sets the place apart from other grounds of its size is the balance between its sporting function and its history as a multi-use arena.
The stadium has changed shape several times. The lower level of the Eastern Stand was added in the mid-2000s.
It has hosted a Rugby League World Cup and an Asian Cup semi-final, but its identity is tied to the local teams that play there week in, week out.
