Meistaravellir

Two competing dates sit on the western edge of Reykjavík's Vesturbær: work on the ground began in 1939, and the gates finally opened on 18 July 1951, with KR beating Vålerenga of Norway 3–2 in a friendly. The surface then was gravel; grass followed soon after.

For decades the ground was not really a home. KR played at Melavöllur and Laugardalsvöllur, and only from 1984 did the club settle at Kaplaskjólsvegur permanently. The first match of that arrangement drew 280 people. Fourteen years later, on 26 September 1998, a First Division fixture against ÍBV pulled in 5,400 — roughly double what the terraces are rated to hold. In 1999, the club's centenary year, the average was 2,501.

European football has passed through twice worth noting. In the 1984/85 UEFA Cup first round, Queens Park Rangers won 3–0 here on the way to 7–0 on aggregate; Häcken of Sweden came in 2007. Iceland's national side has used the ground, though Laugardalsvöllur remains its home.

The name has moved with the money. KR-völlur — "KR's field" — is what people call it regardless; between roughly 2015 and 2018 it carried the pharmaceutical sponsor's name, Alvogenvöllurinn, and it is now Meistaravellir, "champions' field". KV Reykjavík share the tenancy.

Reconstruction started on 5 December 2024. The artificial surface laid in 2023 had worn out under the load of every team training on it, so another synthetic pitch is going down, alongside a new stand and a city-funded administrative building. The stated long-term figure is 8,000.
