The name is doing real work here. The ground was opened on 24 September 1921 by the Lord Mayor of Bristol, H. B.

That history was formally recognised in 2016, when the site was locally listed — under the name Bristol Memorial Ground, the older wording rather than the current one. Bristol Rovers play here now, in Horfield.

The current figure of 12,500 dates only from June 2023, when a new permanent south stand was completed. Which means the attendance record — 12,011 for the visit of West Bromwich on 9 March 2008 — was set fifteen years before the ground reached the capacity it holds today.

The pitch is grass, though not left alone: in 2017 it was rebuilt with synthetic fibres worked into the surface to hold it together through a full season of use.
