Merck-Stadion am Böllenfalltor
For one season the ground carried the name of a supporter. Jonathan Heimes, a Darmstadt fan who became a figure in the fight against cancer and whose story ran alongside the club's climb to the Bundesliga, died in March 2016; Merck, the chemical company down the road in Darmstadt and holder of the naming rights since July 2014, gave them up voluntarily for a year. The company employed Heimes's father for more than 25 years. In 2017 the Merck name returned, and the deal now runs to 2028.
The attendance record has stood since 15 August 1981, the opening round of the Bundesliga season against Bayern Munich, lost 1:2 in front of an officially recorded 30,000 — estimates on the day put it nearer 32,000. It will not be beaten. The spending broke the club financially.
What replaced it took five years and about 50 million euros, against an initial estimate of 28.5 million. The old back stand came down on 10 December 2018; the new main stand opened on 17 December 2022, with the VIP areas finished in March 2023. In March 2025 Germany's U21 side beat Spain 3:1 here in front of a full house.
