Mewa Arena

The name on the outside has changed three times in fifteen years. From the opening in 2011 it was the Coface Arena; from 19 May 2016 the naming rights sat with Opel, and the ground was the Opel Arena until June 2021. In July 2021 it became the Mewa Arena, after the textile-service firm MEWA.

The pitch is natural grass with under-soil heating, laid over a project that cost €60 million and began with a foundation stone on 5 May 2009. The design came from agn Niederberghaus & Partner, with Dr Axel Nixdorf named as architect.

The official opening on 3 July 2011 was marked with a pre-season tournament, the Ligatotal! Cup, which brought Borussia Dortmund, Hamburg and Bayern to Mainz; Bayern won it. The first competitive night came on 7 August 2011 against Bayer Leverkusen, watched by 33,500 — close to the ground's full 34,034.

Germany have used it twice since. The friendly against Armenia on 6 June 2014 was a run-out, and on 11 June 2019 the ground held a qualifier against Estonia.

Concerts and corporate events fill some of the gaps in the football calendar, though the housing that sits close to the ground puts limits on how large a music event can get here.
