Shamrock Rovers built this ground themselves. When the club settled in Milltown in 1926, supporters raised the main stand and banked the earth on the other three sides by hand. Glenmalure Park only became the ground's proper title in the 1930s, after control passed to the Cunningham family, who named it for the Wicklow valley they came from — though around the city it was always just Milltown.

The ground grew with the club: terracing went in on the open sides during the mid-1930s, and floodlights followed in the early 1980s. For the visit of Celtic in the 1986 European Cup, temporary stands had to go up outside the existing capacity.

Milltown's largest recorded crowd, 28,000, came for a league match against Waterford in 1968. The bulldozers came in 1990, and Glenmalure Square, a housing estate, now stands where the terraces once were.
