The ground staged five group matches, the last-16 tie between the Netherlands and Slovakia, and a semi-final in which Spain beat Germany 1-0. FIFA played it under the neutral tag Durban Stadium for the tournament, reverting afterwards to the name honouring Moses Mabhida, the former general secretary of the South African Communist Party. Three years later it returned to continental football for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations, hosting a quarter-final South Africa lost to Congo DR on penalties and a semi-final in which Nigeria beat Mali 4-1.

The record crowd, 62,712, dates from the World Cup itself — Portugal against Brazil, a goalless draw on 25 June 2010. A separate cricket record, 55,500, was set at a T20 international against India in January 2011.
