MSK Titov Arena sits on Sakharov Square in Barnaul. The original structure, known as the Palace of Sports and Entertainment, opened at the end of 1966 with a wooden ceiling that eventually began to deteriorate. That decay forced a closure in 2018, bringing the building to a halt for two years while a new owner oversaw a complete reconstruction. The old wood was ripped out and replaced with a metal structure, and the interior was fitted with a modern cooling system and a multimedia cube.
Today the arena is dominated by its artificial ice rink, a flat rectangle of white nothingness that contrasts sharply with the grey concrete surroundings. When HC Dynamo-Altaisk takes to the ice, the crowd roars them on.
The renovation in 2019 brought a new name, Titov-Arena, honouring a local figure. The capacity has shrunk from its peak, but the energy in the room has not.
The building stands firm, a reminder that some things endure through change.
