Municipal Nicolas Chahuan

The Estadio Municipal Nicolás Chahuán Nazar does not sit quietly in La Calera. The original venue from 1950 vanished when demolition began in 2017. What replaced it arrived quickly, opening its doors on January 16, 2019, after a rebuild driven by strict standards for safety and television rather than any major tournament.

The most noticeable feature is the roof. The red seats sit beneath this curve, and the pitch is synthetic, laid with a cork shock pad that gives the surface a uniform look.

The stadium was renamed in 1988 to honour Nicolás Chahuán Nazar, a local figure who helped found Unión La Calera and died suddenly after a match against Santiago Wanderers. The club has played its home games here ever since. The capacity sits at 9,200, all seated. The pitch was rotated 90 degrees to a North-South axis during the reconstruction to improve lighting conditions for evening fixtures.

The venue has hosted significant competitions in recent years. It accepted four Copa Libertadores Group G matches in 2021, which proceeded behind closed doors due to the pandemic. It also hosted two Copa Sudamericana First Stage fixtures in 2019, including a win against Atlético Mineiro. The club now faces a different challenge: preparing to host matches for the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup. The white exterior panels are perforated with a pattern that catches the light, a design choice that sets the building apart from the older municipal stadiums in the Valparaíso Region.
