Vasil Levski National Stadium
Sofia, Bulgaria
The concrete walkways of the Vasil Levski National Stadium in Sofia retain a specific quality of silence, even when the pitch is empty. The facility opened in July 1953, standing on land where the older Levski Field and Yunak Stadium had previously been demolished. The structure is defined by its history rather than by modern comforts. It began as a standing arena for roughly 42,000 people before an upper tier was added in 1966, swelling the capacity to nearly 80,000. That era ended with a renovation in 2002 to meet UEFA standards, converting the terraces to an all-seater configuration and fixing the capacity at 43,230. Despite the reduction, the ground still holds the memory of a 68,000-strong crowd watching a European qualifier against Italy in 1968. The stadium’s identity is tied to the Bulgarian national team, though that relationship has become complicated in recent years. It has also hosted other tenants, most notably CSKA Sofia, who moved their fixtures here between 2024 and 2026. Beyond football, the vast bowl has seen everything from the 1977 Summer Universiade to concerts by Ed Sheeran and Madonna. The most significant shadow over the ground in recent times is the 2019 Euro 2020 qualifier against England, which was halted due to racist chanting and led to charges against the Bulgarian Football Union.
