Odebrecht built it to designs by Aníbal Coutinho and Gensler, at a cost of R$ 965 million.

For the tournament the arena went under the name Arena de São Paulo , with temporary stands bolted on for a further R$ 38.1 million to lift it to roughly 68,727. The record dates from that summer: 63,267 for the semi-final between Argentina and the Netherlands on 9 July 2014. The stands came down afterwards, and R$ 20 million went on permanent balconies and scoreboards in their place, which is why the ground Corinthians play in now is the smaller, finished version of the one the world saw.

The pitch is a Desso GrassMaster hybrid — 96 per cent natural grass, 4 per cent synthetic fibre injected into the root zone — laid before the 2014 tournament.

The name changed on 1 September 2020, when Hypera Pharma took the rights and Arena Corinthians became Neo Química Arena .
