The Estadio Ciudad de los Deportes does not sit quietly in Mexico City. It was opened in 1946 as a multi-purpose venue, but its identity shifted sharply in 1996 when sponsorship renamed it Estadio Azul. That change in name marked a change in purpose: the club Club América needed a place to play while their historic home, the Estadio Azteca, was being prepared for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Azteca’s capacity is roughly 87,523, but the capacity here stands at 34,253, a different scale entirely for the same team.

The club played at multiple temporary venues during the 2025 season, with this ground serving as the primary home. The situation was distinct from other clubs facing stadium issues; unlike Club Necaxa, which moved to a fixed home in Aguascalientes in 2003, or Cruz Azul, which faced delays in building a new private stadium, América’s situation was a direct result of the World Cup renovations. The stadium was owned by OCESA, and its role was temporary.

The atmosphere here is defined by uncertainty. In late 2024, the stadium faced temporary closure for safety reviews regarding crowd control, causing scheduling uncertainty. The club even considered venues in the United States, such as Dignity Health Sports Park in Los Angeles, for international competitions like the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup. The stadium’s capacity is not exceptional, but it held the team together. The stadium weathered the storm of the renovation period. The stadium’s identity is tied to the club’s absence from its true home.
