New York Stadium

The name came with the land. "New York" was what the maps called this corner of Rotherham right up to the 1980s, and the ground took it over when it was built on the site of Guest and Chrimes, a works that had made the valves for fire hydrants shipped to the American city.

Planning permission was granted in 2010, construction began on 16 June 2011, and Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, performed the official opening on 12 March 2012 — months before the first match was played there, on 21 July 2012. The ground was designed by S+P Architects, with GMI Construction as main contractor and Gleeds managing the project.

That figure — 25,170, for a Second Division match against Sheffield United on 13 December 1952 — was set at Millmoor , and it stays there, a number from a different ground and a different era.

The pitch has changed under the players' feet since.
