NKT Arena Karlskrona

NKT Arena now occupies one of those blocks. It opened in 2005 as a multi-purpose facility. The name has changed four times since it first hosted a crowd, starting as Vodafone Arena Rosenholm before becoming Telenor Arena Karlskrona, then Arena Karlskrona, ABB Arena Karlskrona, and finally settling on its current title.

It is not a traditional football stadium. The primary pitch is artificial grass. The ice hockey team Karlskrona HK calls it home, and the arena holds just over five thousand spectators for their matches in HockeyEttan. The capacity swells slightly for wider events, but the figures are not set in stone. The building lacks the history of a single sport; instead, it carries the weight of the city’s cultural calendar. It hosted two heats of the Melodifestivalen in 2006 and 2008, bringing a different kind of noise to the stands than the local hockey crowds.

The town itself is defined by the water, a naval base built on islands that still feels separate from the mainland. The arena sits apart from the historic centre, near the edge of the planned district. There is no eye-catching landmark outside the building itself, no statue guarding the entrance, just the glass frontage reflecting the sky. Inside, the layout is driven by the needs of hockey, with the ice surface taking up the central space and the artificial pitch tucked away in a corner. It is a practical building, designed to serve the community rather than impress visitors. The sponsors have come and gone, leaving their mark only on the signage, while the structure remains unchanged.
