John Cain Arena has changed its name five times since it opened as Show Court 1 at what was then simply Melbourne's National Tennis Centre, and every rename tracked a sponsor rather than a rebuild: Vodafone, then Hisense, then a plain civic pause as Melbourne Arena, before the Victorian government settled on the current name for the state's second premier. The seating itself is the more useful marker of what the building actually does — a touch over ten thousand for tennis, basketball or netball, stretching toward eleven thousand when the court gives way to a concert stage, figures that place it a clear step below Rod Laver Arena next door without ever feeling like an overflow venue in its own right.

The record crowd through those doors came for a Melbourne United fixture against the New Zealand Breakers in December 2016, a number netball had already touched more than a decade earlier — a reminder that the arena has never belonged to one code the way Rod Laver belongs to the Australian Open. The floor itself changes with the tenant: hard court under GreenSet paint for January's tennis, timber laid over for the basketball and netball seasons that fill the rest of the calendar.

It sits inside the wider Melbourne Park precinct, a short walk from Margaret Court Arena and the newer Kia Arena, on ground the city has been building tennis and multi-purpose courts on since the late 1980s. The open-air Olympic Park Stadium that once stood nearby, a separate venue entirely despite the shared address, was pulled down in 2012.
