Olympic Stadium

Nobody in Mexico City calls it by its full name. It is simply University City's stadium, cut into a hillside of volcanic rock in Coyoacán and built as part of the campus that the National Autonomous University of Mexico raised for itself in the early 1950s, its bowl following the natural slope of the ground rather than fighting it.

The name changed once, and for a reason that still defines the place: in 1968 it became the main stage of the Olympic Games, and the venue kept the title afterwards rather than reverting to Estadio Universitario. Few grounds in the region can claim to have hosted a full Olympic opening ceremony and still serve as a weekly football home decades later.

That football home belongs to UNAM Pumas, whose ties to the ground run through the university itself rather than through a separate club presence in the city. There is no dedicated stadium website; anyone looking for fixtures or facilities details is pointed to the club's own pages, a small detail that says something about how tightly the arena and the institution are bound together.

The capacity has moved with the times more than the structure has. It opened for tens of thousands, swelled past its original size for the Olympic tournament, and has since settled lower again under modern safety limits, a pattern of expansion and retreat rather than one fixed number carried through its history.
