Orlando Stadium takes its name from the township that surrounds it. Orlando Pirates have called it home since 1970. In the 1970s Kaizer Chiefs shared the pitch and won their first titles there, in 1974, 1977, 1979 and 1981. Moroka Swallows played there too in that same stretch.

The stadium's other history runs through politics rather than football. On 16 June 1976 schoolchildren marched toward the ground, and that march became the opening moment of the Soweto Uprising. Nelson Mandela spoke here in 1994. Walter Sisulu's funeral was held at the stadium in 1993, followed by Joe Slovo's in 1995, Albertina Sisulu's in 2011 and Winnie Mandela's in 2018.

The current bowl dates from a rebuild carried out between 2006 and 2008, ahead of the 2010 World Cup, though the stadium never hosted a match of that tournament itself — it served as a training base instead. On 10 June 2010 it staged the World Cup's global opening concert, with Shakira, Alicia Keys, The Who and John Legend among those who performed. It has also hosted rugby's Super 14 final and finals of the MTN 8 and Nedbank Cup.
