Þórsvöllur

Þórsvöllur takes its name from the club it houses, and the club's roots go back further than the ground itself — Þór Akureyri had been playing in the town since 1915 long before this pitch was laid. What sets the place apart from most Icelandic grounds of its size is the surface: artificial turf, a practical answer to a climate that would otherwise make a natural pitch unworkable for half the calendar.

The stadium briefly carried a sponsor's name, VÍS völlurinn, after work completed there in mid-2009, though that tag never displaced the original in everyday use. A further round of building work is recorded as recently as 2023, evidence that a ground built in 2007 has needed continual upkeep rather than standing untouched.

Capacity is where the record gets untidy — figures from 2,984 down to 1,550 have circulated across different years and different counts, likely reflecting temporary seating and safety limits that shifted from one season to the next rather than any single fixed number. Roughly a third of the higher figure is seated, the rest standing.

Akureyri sits far enough north that this venue counts among the northernmost settings for organised football anywhere, though the sources at hand say nothing of the town's other stadium or how the two grounds divide the local footballing calendar between them.
