The Palace of Sports in Kyiv opened on 9 December 1960. It was built as an all-weather hall for basketball and ice hockey, with a parquet floor that can be converted to ice in under 48 hours. The capacity was originally around 10,700 before the 2011 reconstruction trimmed it to 7,000 for sporting events; the figure for concerts remains different at roughly 10,000. Sokil Kyiv has played there since 1963, and BC Kyiv-Basket since 2018.

The venue has hosted three Eurovision events — the main contest in 2005 and the junior version in 2009 — but its sporting record is quieter. It has staged 16 world championships and 28 European championships across five sports, which pulled 10,000 people. The architect was Mykhailo Hrechynta, working with engineer Viktor Repyakh, and the building is owned by the joint-stock company Kyivskyi Palats Sportu CJSC, established in 1995. It has not been renamed since opening.

The arena has seen changes in tenancy.
