Before the ground took its current shape, the plot on Terregles Street was known as Palmers Toun, a farm where informal football had already been played since the 1870s. Queen of the South have called it home since the club's formation.

A fire destroyed the old main stand, and its replacement went up in 1965. Thirty years later the East Stand followed: the open terrace came down for a covered, all-seated single tier. The Terregles Street terrace had a rockier path — safety concerns shut it in the late 1990s, cutting into the ground's overall capacity, and it stayed closed until a safety certificate let it reopen in September 2014, now used mainly to house away support.

The record crowd goes back to 23 February 1952, when 26,552 packed in for a Scottish Cup third-round tie against Hearts of Midlothian; the visitors won 3-1. Palmerston Park has had its moments away from football, too — Status Quo headlined the ground's first major concert in 2015, with Big Country and Reef opening.
