Panthessaliko
Volos, Greece
It was built for a specific purpose that has since faded. Completed in 2004, the ground was constructed in time for the football tournament of the Athens Olympics, when only a portion of the 22,189 seats were used for the group stage match between Greece and Mexico. While the Olympic legacy is largely quiet now, the stadium has remained a neutral host for domestic affairs, staging the Greek Cup Final on multiple occasions, including in 2007 and 2024.
The playing surface is a hybrid turf, installed in 2019 to replace an earlier version that failed under the local conditions. There is no under-pitch heating, a practical omission that reflects the climate. The ground has seen more than two decades of history with tenants who have come and gone.
What remains visible in the stands is a sense of local identity.
