Work began in 2002 on a site where an earlier, unfinished pitch had stalled, and the finished bowl cost around €50,000,000 — a consortium of Techniki Olympiaki, Athinaiki Techniki, Intracom Kataskeves and Cybarco built it, with the structure designed by Schneider & Partner Ingenieur-Consult and detailed by Instat. It opened on 30 July 2004 with a friendly between the Olympic sides of Greece and Australia, then took group matches of the men's tournament, among them Greece against Mexico and Japan against Italy.

Because the Olympic schedule left no room to nurse natural grass, the pitch was laid as an Armstrong DD GrassMaster hybrid from the start.

What has kept it in use since is the Greek Cup. The final came here in 2007, for Larissa against Panathinaikos, and again in 2017, when PAOK met AEK. Greece hosted Kosovo in the Nations League in 2022.

It was chosen as the main venue for the 2013 Mediterranean Games, then lost the event to Mersin when construction ran late. The site belongs to the Public Properties Company and is run by the municipality; Volos NFC, the current tenant, spent about €400,000 on modernisation in 2024, surveillance cameras included, to meet new security rules.
