Parkstad Limburg

Seven years of synthetic turf ended in the summer of 2021, when Roda JC Kerkrade pulled up the plastic and laid natural grass. It was a return rather than a departure: the ground had opened with an artificial surface.

Roda came here from Kaalheide, into a building designed by Jan Dautzenberg and put up by Wyckerveste Adviseurs BV, which developed the site and owns it. Construction ran to roughly €37 million. The name has never been sold, even though municipal rules leave the door open to a sponsor — Parkstad Limburg Stadion is what it was called on the day it opened and what it is called now.

The one substantial change came in 2008, with a new South Stand carrying covered seating, business seats and skyboxes. It was named the Theo Pickée Stand after the late Roda JC chairman.

Its fullest night was February 2002, when AC Milan came in the UEFA Cup and won 1–0. Three years later the ground took the opening match and the semi-finals of the FIFA World Youth Championship, and in 2023 it staged the Netherlands against Belgium. Between matches it has held military band competitions and concerts, André Rieu among them. A hotel and restaurant sit within the complex; a fire broke out on its roof terrace in 2021.
