The opening followed on 25 September 1972, marked with a friendly rather than a competitive fixture, which is the usual way a small ground introduces itself to its neighbourhood.

Two thousand seats puts it well below the grounds used by Uruguay's leading sides, and Paso de la Arena itself sits on the western edge of Montevideo, away from the clubs that draw the bigger crowds.
