Peavey Mart Centrium
Red Deer, Canada
Formerly: Centrium, ENMAX Centrium, Peavey Mart Centrium
The ground in Red Deer does not pretend to be anything other than a working building. It sits inside the Werer Park complex, where the real estate is used for more than one purpose. The arena opened for the Western Hockey League (WHL) in 1991. It is not a shrine, but it is a venue that has hosted the 2016 Memorial Cup and the 2022 Hlinka Gretzky Cup, the first time a single Canadian community held the entire second event.
The architecture is functional, designed to capture a crowd for a hockey match or to hold one for a concert. The capacity sits at 6,623 for the sport, but the room expands to nearly 7,819 when the stage is set up. It has seen the likes of Elton John and Mötley Crüe as well as the Canadian Finals Rodeo, which pulled in 37,000 tickets in 2023.
It was expanded once, in 2012, to handle the growing demand. The ice is natural, maintained by a refrigeration system that keeps the surface flat for the Red Deer Rebels. There is just the building and the jobs it performs. It is a busy place, hosting over 1,500 events a year.
