Pista Handbol Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper
Sant Joan Despí, Spain
The Pista Handbol Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper does not announce itself with a façade. It sits inside a complex bought by FC Barcelona in 1989, finally opening on June 1, 2006. The ground is quiet, tucked into the Baix Llobregat comarca of Sant Joan Despí, and its primary function is not to draw crowds but to train the next generation of players.
Inside the larger multisport arena, capacity is limited to 472. It is a room for watching practice, not a cathedral for finals. The club’s first-handball team rarely plays here; that space belongs to the Palau Blaugrana. Instead, this court hosts matches for the FC Barcelona Handbol B team, keeping the academy in the shadow of the main stage. The surface is standard for indoor sport, though the specific material is not recorded in public sources.
Joan Gamper, the club’s founder, lends the entire complex its name from the start. There is no history of renames, no architectural shift for a World Cup, and no wind tunnel raging through the stands. The only notable disruption occurred on the nearby B-23 highway on May 30, 2023, when a crane fire drew attention away from the training pitches. The facility has hosted international sessions, including Argentina under coach Jorge Sampaoli, and served as a backdrop for player presentations for the Joan Gamper Trophy, such as those for Memphis Depay and Sergio Agüero in 2021.
It is a working space. On March 22, 2025, the complex marked the club’s 125th anniversary with the La Marxa Culer fan event, but the handball hall itself remains a functional box. The cost to build was €77.5 million, covering 136,839–163,650 m² of land. The handball court has stood unchanged since 2006. It is not a landmark; it is a locker room with seats.
