Pittodrie Stadium

The ground on Pittodrie Street opened on 2 September 1899, and the club marked the day by putting seven past Dumbarton. It has stayed the same address ever since.

What a visitor sees now is largely the work of one man, and not the man who laid the place out in 1899 — that name is gone, lost with the club archives in the fire of 1971. The Main Stand was begun in 1921 and finished in 1925 to a design by Archibald Leitch, the Glasgow architect. Leitch went on to shape other parts of Pittodrie too, and his style still sets the tone of the place.

The name shifted once. Until 1968 the ground was generally known as Pittodrie Park; when the Main Stand was converted to all-seating that year, it became Pittodrie Stadium, and it has carried that ever since. No sponsor has ever been attached to it.

The pitch is grass, with undersoil heating fitted in 1987 and drainage beneath. In February 2026 the club patched a troublesome area in front of the goal at the Merkland End with hybrid turf — a repair, not a conversion.

The attendance record belongs to a Scottish Cup tie against Hearts in March 1954, when 45,061 came through the gates.
