Polideportivo Municipal Aritzbatalde

Zarautz, Spain

Most people in Zarautz associate the town with football, but the Polideportivo Municipal Aritzbatalde belongs to a different rhythm. It is not a place for ninety-minute matches on a green expanse. It is a compact indoor complex at Araba Kalea, 20, built for sports that demand hard surfaces and quick reflexes.

The facility is clear enough to understand without a map. It houses courts for handball and basketball, alongside a dedicated space for Basque pelota. A gymnasium and a swimming pool complete the layout.

The connection to the local football club is indirect but necessary. While the men’s team plays its matches at the separate Estadio Asti Kirol Instalakuntzak, the handball section of Club Deportivo Zarautz calls this pavilion home. The distinction matters. One venue has a grass surface and a capacity of 800 spectators. This one does not. The official spectator capacity for the Aritzbatalde pavilion was not found, and the opening year remains unclear. Sources cite 1985 for the Asti stadium and 2002 for a different educational centre, but the complex itself sits in a grey area of the archives.

It is owned by the Zarautz City Council, which suggests a public function rather than a commercial one. The building is functional. It does not pretend to be a cathedral for football. It is a gymnasium with a pool.
