The stadium that stands on Avenue Hassan II today is not the one that opened on 24 July 1983. That earlier arena held around 52,000 behind a running track and stayed in service for four decades before SONARGES tore it down completely in 2023 and rebuilt a pure football ground on the same footprint — no athletics lanes, stands pulled in tight to the pitch. Populous led the design alongside three Moroccan practices, Orange Atelier, Urban Archi Studio and YAMÉ Architecture Studio, and handed the finished stadium over on 5 September 2025.

The pitch is the detail worth noting: a hybrid of natural grass and synthetic fibres, the first surface of its kind built in Africa, laid to FIFA standard. Capacity figures move depending on the source — CAF listed 68,095 for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations with room to expand to 68,700, a gap that most likely separates the design capacity from the configuration actually used on match days. The record crowd, 66,525, came on 18 January 2026, for the AFCON final between Morocco and Senegal.

Reconstruction cost is put at roughly $75m, or 686 million dirhams; a figure of 795 million dirhams turns up elsewhere but appears to cover the wider Complexe Moulay Abdellah rather than the stadium alone. Built to Africa Cup of Nations standard, the ground was also raised to World Cup specification and is booked for a semi-final at the 2030 tournament. Real Madrid played the 2022 Club World Cup final here; the venue also staged the 2014 final, a Women's Africa Cup of Nations semi-final in 2022, and matches from the 1988 Cup of Nations on the old ground. Morocco's national team and AS FAR are its listed tenants, with FUS Rabat named in some records.
