Racecourse Ground

Wales met Scotland here on 5 March 1877 and lost 0–2, which is why the ground on Mold Road holds a distinction no rebuild can take away from it: no older international football stadium is still in use anywhere. The site was already almost seventy years old by then, laid out in 1807 for cricket and horse racing, and it was Wrexham Cricket Club that leased the land to Wrexham AFC when the club formed in 1864.

The largest crowd it has taken came on 27 February 1957, when 34,445 packed in for an FA Cup fourth round tie against Manchester United and watched the home side lose 0–5. 33,160 had seen Wales beat Ireland 2–0 in the British Home Championship, still the record for an international here. The Arsenal tie of 1991 belongs in the same company: Wrexham won it 2–1.

Nothing about the present ground is settled. Ahead of it came the £1.7m overhaul of 2025 — undersoil heating, goal-line technology, television gantries — on top of the GrassMaster hybrid surface.
