Örjans vall

The ground carries the name of a medieval hospital. Sankt Örjan stood on this land long before football did, and when the arena opened as Halmstads Idrottsplats in July, the name lasted a matter of weeks: by August it was Örjans vall.

It was built by men who had no other work. Unemployment in Halmstad ran high in the early 1920s, and the ground came out of a scheme between the State Unemployment Commission and the Swedish Association for the Promotion of Sports, which put relief labourers on the site. The architect, S. Uno Forthmeier, drew the buildings without a fee. The committee behind the project was chaired by Johan A. Andersson, who ran the town's stevedoring company.

The biggest crowd for a match did not come for Halmstads BK. In October 1962 IS Halmia met Landskrona BoIS in a promotion play-off and 20,381 people got in. Four years earlier the World Cup had brought two Group 1 matches here: Northern Ireland beat Czechoslovakia 1–0 in front of 10,647, then lost 3–1 to Argentina before 14,174, the largest attendance the tournament drew in Halmstad. Music has since pulled in more than either — Gyllene Tider played to 27,168 in 2004.

The wooden stands came down in 1972, replaced by a concrete main stand and a scoreboard. The running tracks went in the 1980s, which brought the crowd in towards the pitch. The most recent rebuild was budgeted at 75 million SEK and meant to be finished in 2015; delays and extra work carried it to 2017 and to 86 million. Halmstads BK have played here throughout, and the municipality owns and runs the place.
