When the plans came before the city in December 2010, Mayor Andriy Sadovyi had to choose between rival suggestions — one calling it Lemberg after the old Austro-Hungarian name for the city, another pushing for it to honour Stepan Bandera. Both were set aside for the plain, functional Arena Lviv.
It was built for a single purpose: to be ready for UEFA EURO 2012 .
Rukh only moved in during August 2020, leaving behind Skif, a stadium dating back to 1897 that had been patched up in 2011 but could no longer meet top-flight requirements.
